I saw a kingfisher!
We saw a kingfisher! We saw a kingfisher!
Okay, by the end of this you’ll either think as I did “Wow” or you’ll be thinking sad cow but WE SAW A KINGFISHER this weekend!
I bought some plants while on holiday the other week and we decided that as they truly are outdoor plants we would have to break the sorry news to them: they needed to go out into the garden. They had been indoors long enough. I’d put them in a cooler spot to acclimatise them and the moment had arrived. Trowel in hand I stood at the patio doors, Dear Husband at my side, while we discussed where to put them. In the end we put them in bigger pots and decided we would plant them up in the spring. While we’re talking this brilliant streak of turquoise blue flies across my vision.
A kingfisher lands on the little acer in the middle of the pond and I can’t form more of a coherent thought other than “It’s a kingfisher! Oh wow it’s a kingfisher. It’s a kingfisher…in OUR garden!”
I’ve never seen one in real life before and they are indeed so beautiful! He turned his head, giving us the perfect profile. I could feel his beady little eye on me, as if he’d just noticed us and was thinking “What are you looking at?” Then he turned his head the other way, raising his beak into the air in a haughty manner that told us he didn’t care what we were thinking or that we were looking. That attitude said “I don’t care if you think me beautiful; I already know it.” Then with a flutter of disregard that would make royalty proud he flew off.
Someone has told me it’s a sure sign of good luck. Regardless as to whether that’s truth, it’s an experience to cherish and remember. I certainly felt as giggly as a child and immediately texted a few friends saying, “I’ve just seen a kingfisher!” Thankfully, no one texted back that I was sad. They all said “How wonderful!” or as one person so elegantly put it: “You jammy cow!”

Wow! That is quite wonderful.
It’s so much better to see something in real life than on television but you don’t realise until something like this happens. I felt bouncy for ages afterwards and it still makes me smile. No matter how vibrant they look in pictures the colour is just so fabulous in reality.
